This Memorial Day pack your swimsuits and catch a flight to one of the most pristine beaches the country has to offer. With America’s newest airport since 9/11 opening on May 23, 2010 visitors from across the country can enjoy their holiday lying out on the whitest U.S. beaches. The new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport is putting the renowned emerald beaches of Panama City Beach, Florida on the map as a top tourist destination for summer 2010.

Both Delta Airlines and Southwest Airlines will be flying passengers in and out of Northwest Beaches International Airport, also referred to as “ECP.” Southwest Airlines will offer competitive rates to ensure that as many tourists as possible have the opportunity to see the beauty and abundant attractions of Panama City Beach. With rates beginning as low as $49, there is no reason that you shouldn’t be able to start your summer relaxing on the white sand beaches and splashing in the emerald waters of Florida.

With the construction of the only international airport in Florida’s panhandle at nearly 80% completion, it won’t be long until people from around the world are able to enjoy one of the states premiere beaches with relative ease. Better yet, Southwest Airlines will be running direct flights from four major U.S. cities, including: Orlando, Houston, Baltimore, and Nashville. Residents in cities near these will be able to catch a direct flight, meaning they will not have to switch airplanes. Residents of Chicago can fly through Nashville, New York through Baltimore, Dallas through Houston, and Fort Lauderdale through Orlando. Panama City Beach is now a convenient beach destination for so many people that didn’t have access prior to the opening of the new airport.

For all environmentally cautious people out there, it is also good to know that “ECP” is America’s first “Green Airport.” When the original airport in the Area, Panama City-Bay International Airport failed to meet federal standards, the community realized it would be impossible to bring the airport up to standards without destroying the land surrounding it. Environmentalists group lobbied to move the location of the new Airport in order to protect both the shoreline of St. Andrews Bay and West bay, allowing the current ecosystems to remain undisturbed.

Not only does the new airport protect sensitive lands in the Florida Panhandle, but the airport will have the countries first certified “green” terminals. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental design program, also known as LEED, confirms that the building is certified as a high performance building. Other advanced developments that are environmentally friendly includes the use of sustainable construction materials and a state of the art landscaping system that does not require the use of an irrigation system.

Whether you want to check out the most advanced airport in the country, or some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, the opportunity is now available to you at an affordable rate. Book a flight and be one of the first people to fly into the new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport and enjoy a fun-filled vacation this summer in Panama City Beach, Florida; it is located just 4 miles from the countries most green airport.

Panama City Beach can be a really relaxing vacation destination, so you are in luck that there are so many water activities to get your adrenaline rushing.

Jet Skis- This is one of the most popular water sports on the island and there are many companies that offer the service creating competitive pricing. You can whip through the ocean at high speeds and even race others to add excitement to your vacation. Usually you can rent the equipment for a minimum of thirty minutes, but feel free to ride the waves as long as you can handle it.

Parasailing is a great water sport for people who love to sightsee. This will give you the opportunity to view the beautiful beaches and gulf of Florida from an aerial view. You will start out in the water and slowly be pulled into the air behind a boat for one of the most amazing experiences of your lifetime.

Banana boat rides are a popular attraction on the beaches of Florida. Grab your friends and family, go jump on an inflatable raft in the shape of a banana, and feel the excitement as a jet ski pulls you through the emerald waves. This is a great activity because you get to go fast but you don’t have to be responsible for operating heavy machinery. This is also much cheaper than renting jet skis. The price of the ride always includes life jackets, so there is no need to worry when you go for a banana boat ride.

Kayaking is another adrenaline rushing water sport that visitors love. Rent a kayak and use your upper body strength to fight the waves out in the gulf. You can rent a one seat kayak and take on the gulf on your own or get a two seat kayak and utilize the help of a partner. You can usually pay by the hour or half hour.

Boat rentals are another water activity that many visitors choose to engage in. Whether you want a pontoon boat, sailboat, or glass bottom boat, the opportunity to enjoy the day from afloat is available to you. If you ware wanting to enjoy some time on the water you can rent a boat for a full day or half day. If you choose not to rent a boat, you can always go on a dolphin tour and let someone else take charge while you relax.

When you arrive on the island, go to the local visitors center and check for coupons, so that you can enjoy the water activities at the best rate possible.

1. Sunscreen- This is a big one! You will obviously be spending the majority of your time outside and may not take notice to the amount of ultraviolet radiation that your sun is enduring. Be sure to bring the sunscreen of your choice and apply liberally throughout the day. If you do forget to bring your own, don’t worry. There are numerous beach stores on the beach that you can purchase your favorite brand from as well as grocery stores and a Wal-Mart. However, you should bring it with you, as you will probably want to go check out the beautiful water before heading to the store. It doesn’t take much time in the sun to get a sunburn, so be sure to pack your trusty sunscreen with the rest of your belongings.

2. Aloe Vera Skin Gel- Okay, we have already discussed the importance of sunscreen, but many people forget to apply sunscreen repeatedly throughout the day. This is very bad. You will be spending so much of your time in the sun that there is the possibility of getting a sunburn, and it is important that you are prepared to handle it. You don’t want to wake up with red, soar, itchy skin, but if you do, there is still hope for an enjoyable vacation. You can get Aloe Vera Gel at any of the above mentioned stores ahead of time, so that you don’t have to drag your pained body to the store for the relief that you need, so make sure you bring this along with your sunscreen. You will be happy that you did as it will cool your red hot skin off quickly after application.

3. Money- Bring as much cash with you as you feel is necessary, but remember that most of the beach activities are cash only. If you want to rent an umbrella and chairs to protect yourself from the sun, this is a big one because it will most likely require cash. You can usually rent these by the hour or by the day, but you don’t want to end up getting a sunburn because they don’t accept debit or credit cards. Other various beach rentals such as parasailing, banana boat rides, and sandcastle lessons are likely to ask for cash as well. So, for the sake of having a good time, make sure that you go to the beach prepared to shell out cash. Luckily, ATM’s can be found at most gas stations and banks; however, they will charge a minimal fee.

4. Camera and Camera Charger- This is the most important item to remember of all because you are going to want to remember you trip to Panama City Beach Florida. It is important to bring both parts of the camera, because you can’t have one without the other. You will be upset later on if you forget your camera and are forced to use a disposable. You will probably have so many friends, family, scenic areas, sunsets, and sunrises to take photos of that your camera will go dead at least once, so it is important that you are able to recharge your camera and continue capturing the vacation of your lifetime.

5. Identification- You will need this for traveling whether you are driving or flying. You will be unable to board your plane or rent a vehicle without proving who you are. Make sure you bring your Identification with you so that you are able to arrive at your destination on time without a hassle. If you are driving locally, you will also need your driver’s license in case you get pulled over for speeding. There are so many things that you will need this for, so DO NOT lose your identification. You will need it to get checked into the place you will be staying, but most importantly you will need it if you plan on drinking. Alcohol is a big business in Panama City Beach so come prepared to enjoy your vacation with your ID in hand.

Choose the right place to stay. This is the most important aspect of enjoying a vacation. Most tourists go to Panama City Beach for one thing, the beaches. If you are planning on soaking up the sun, you may want to consider the proximity of where you lodge to the beach. Do you want to be on the beach? Would listening to the waves crash into the shore while you sleep enhance your experience? Do you mind carting your belongings a few blocks to the beach? These are all very important things to think about before booking a place to stay. Try to stay within your budget, but staying in the right place makes all the difference. And as always, consider purchasing vacation insurance just in case your plans fall through.

2. Think ahead. If you are within driving distance to Panama City Beach consider if you want to put the wear and tear on your own vehicle or if it would be worth it to rent a vehicle. Flying? Book your flights far in advance to get the best rates possible. While on the island, there are many ways to get around. Make sure that you keep all phone numbers and travel information on your body; you never know when you might need it. You may also want to store the phone numbers of local taxi agencies in your cell phone. Last but not least, have access to a map; weather it’s on your smart phone or in an atlas, you will need to know how to get from one destination to the next.

3. Know what you are going to do before you arrive. You don’t want to get to the island before you make decisions about what kind of excursions you want to take. It is important to know this ahead of time so that you can make reservations and avoid long lines or encounter all the tickets being sold out. You may also want to go to the local visitors center and see what kind of coupons they have before you starts having fun.

4. Make an itinerary. You should know everything from the time that you arrive to the activities you will enjoy before you set foot in Panama City Beach. There is so much to do that you may get sidetracked and forget to do something that you really wanted to do. While making your itinerary, leave time to sit back and relax. A beach vacation should be enjoyable and laid back.

5. Make a checklist- The worst thing that could happen on a vacation is to find out once you have arrived that you have forgotten your camera or even your sunscreen. Knowing ahead of time what items you will need will make packing easier for you and ensure that you have all the items needed to make your vacation as enjoyable as possible.

6. Go to the bank- You will need cash if you want to rent anything on the beach. By going to the bank before leaving you will be able to avoid excess ATM fees that you will find on the island. There may be instances where you find cash is needed when you were least expecting it.

7. Be prepared for an emergency- Planning for the unexpected will keep you calm in case of a disaster. Make sure you and your party have an emergency plan in place. Designate a leader and decide where you will meet and what will you do in case of an emergency so that your party doesn’t get separated.

We all knew that the cold weather we had a few weeks ago was a bit too much. We even realized that it was colder than it ever usually is. We didn’t, however, realize that we were facing a disaster situation until all the crops began to die.

Normally when the freezing weather returns every winter it never really drops below freezing too long, nor does it last many consecutive days. They say that crops begin to die if their internal temperature drops to 28 degrees Fahrenheit for four hours or more at any given point. Well, the beginning of January was a rough one for much of Florida. We generally only get a few days a year that happen to even reach the freezing point, but this year Bay County had 14 days straight of below freezing temperature, which destroyed many of our crops.

We all knew the freezing weather felt horrible and that it could destroy crops, but it really didn’t start hitting home until we realized that the temperatures just were never going to return to normal. Charlie Crist asked for disaster declaration for all of Florida’s 67 counties, but it was granted to only 60 of them. So, basically the whole state was and still is faced with the crop dilemma. I noticed it myself today at the grocery store when I hated the berry section. Blueberries typically at $3-4 were at $5 and some change. But the strawberries that normally range just a little more than the blueberries were topping the charts at $8.50. I had to skip the strawberries this time. So, Florida’s crops are devastated and those South American strawberry farms can’t compete with the prices we’re used to paying. Everyone loses here.

10. It’s a party town- The majority of the year, PCB is a pretty calm and laid back place to vacation. If you aren’t into the party scene and want to enjoy a beach vacation during the spring break season then PCB probably is not the place for you. Luckily, spring break season only falls during the month of March, leaving you nearly 11 months of the year to enjoy everything that PCB has to offer. If the girls gone wild scene is what you are looking for, you should hit up the beach in March.

9. It is expensive- I’m not exactly sure where this rumor has come about, but PCB is actually cheaper than other comparable destinations in some aspects. For example, the recent influx of vacation rentals has driven the price of lodging in the area down significantly. Not to mention, beach access is free most places that you go. Trust me, you won’t find a cheaper beach vacation.

8.There isn’t anything to do- Once again; I’m not sure about this one. Every time I have gone to PCB there has been so much to do that I didn’t have the opportunity to get it all done. No matter who is vacationing with you, there is something for everyone. There are golf courses, fishing, tours, beach activities, shopping, dining, water parks, go-carts, parasailing, bungee jumping, and so much more.

7. There isn’t any good food to eat- This myth is my personal favorite. There is a variety of every type of food that you could possibly want to eat in PCB. There is an excess of pancake places for breakfast, tons of fast food, plenty of local seafood, several locally owned Greek restaurants, Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, and all the chains you could possible want. You will not go hungry in PCB. Fare warning for those of you from Texas or Mexico: Pass on the Mexican food because you will be severely disappointed, others may like it.

6. The island is a dump- This may have been a concern in the early 2000’s, but this kind of rhetoric is no longer applicable. PCB is a new and vibrant city thanks to the many recent construction projects. The main street is lined with luxurious condominiums and entertainment districts. The beaches are as beautiful as always and the island is better kept than ever before.

5. The beach is dangerous- The Panama City Beach Police Department has a specific until designated to the beach to ensure the safety of all citizens. The Beach and Surf Information Unit keeps a close watch on the water and places beach warning flags in areas where people swim. As long as you heed the warnings of the flags you should be safe.

4. The beaches are crowded- There are certain times of the year when the beaches are more crowded than others. Luckily, PCB has 27 miles of beaches. There is plenty of beach access and room for all. But, if you are looking for something more low key, St. Andrew’s State Park is the place to go. This state park has over a mile and half of beach area and other various recreational activities as well.

3.There is not enough lodging- This is not a myth, but a flat out lie. PCB has everything you could possibly want. There are campgrounds, RV parks, motels, hotels, condominiums, and cabins. You name it and Panama City Beach has it! But, my suggestion is to stay in a condo on the beach if you want to get the most out of your vacation.

2. You will be eaten by a shark- Billions of people flock to beaches each year and it is very rare to hear about shark attacks. Sharks do live in the water, and no matter what beach vacation you take you will hear tales about sharks. Stop worrying and enjoy the water, you have a better chance of being struck by lightening.

1.Your vacation will be ruined by hurricanes- I wouldn’t worry too much about this one. Unlike other natural disasters, there is plenty of warning before a hurricane approaches. Go ahead and book your vacation in advance and be sure to purchase insurance. If by chance a hurricane does roll through, you will be covered. Quit being fooled by rumors and plan the vacation of your dreams.
